BREAKING NEWS: The Winddrinker WORKS!

18-04-2012 We produced clean drinking water for the first time in Somaliland! Thanks to Bas from the tudelft! Bas has been working in Berbera for the last 10 days to do the final tweaking. And not without succes; today, just before he leaves tomorrow, he turned the Winddrinker on and was able to convert brackish water into perfectly clean water of mineral quality! What a fantastic achievement! Thanks to the whole team! Hopefully we may give as many people as possible access to this technology! Especially those who's lives are threaten by severe drought!

No fresh water yet, but major progress made!

15-12-2011 In the last few weeks the team in Somaliland worked extremely hard under supervision of Bas Heijman (Delft University of Technology). Bas was in Somaliland for 10 days with the goal to install the Winddrinker system. They achieved this goal successfully! Of course, we hoped to produce fresh water for the first time, but looking at all the problems we had to overcome we are very satisfied that everything is built. Bas and the local team did an amazing job; missing parts, a shaft which was too short and a pomp that got completely stuck where just a few of the problems they managed to overcome successfully!

During our Christmas Holidays we will prepare the next trip early 2012 which will have the ultimate goal to produce fresh water. Looking forward to this!

Windmill is Working!

23-11-2011 Today we have reached another milestone: the Windmill is working! Next step is to connect the desalination unit!

Sad News: Wall has been destroyed by the wind...

07-08-2011 After so many highlights we now have a serious issue. The location was of course chosen because of its strong winds, but we did not expect that it would blow away our wall. Unfortunately, as you can see on the picture, we have serious damage...

The Well is finished

03-08-2011 The well construction has finished! The well has been tested and demonstrated a perfect water flow! Also, the salt content was lower than we expected, which will result in higher yield of desalinated water.

Construction has started

24-07-2011 Early July Abdurahman (aka Abdi) left to Somaliland to start the construction of The Winddrinker. The first week Abdi, was busy with the paperwork to get the containers cleared. Together with our local team member Abdirizaq he managed to get all the paperwork done in just 1.5 week. Last week construction work really started! Of course we faced some start-up problems. The manual drilling of the well (jetting) was at first not successful. However, after some adjustments of the drilling bit at a local workshop, the drill is now cutting into the earth like a hot knife in butter! We have now reached a depth of 7m, just 4 more meter and the drilling is done...exciting.

Container has been shipped

In May the container with the Osmosis System has been loaded and shipped to Somaliland. We also send some essential medical equipment and medicines for the Berbera Hospital.
